Taking Care Of My Pet

About Me

Taking Care Of My Pet

After I found out that I would be traveling a lot for my new job, I knew that I was going to have to make arrangements to care for my dog. I was nervous about leaving him behind, but I knew that the road would be far less comfortable than a cozy boarding facility. To find a great location, I talked with some of my pet owner friends and visited each location in person. I was able to find a facility that put pet care above all else, and I felt comfortable leaving my dog. This blog is dedicated to helping pet owners take care of their pets--even if they happen to travel for work.

3 Tips for Preparing Your Dog for the Groomers

Having your dog professionally groomed is great in order to make sure that it is done properly and that your pet is well taken care of. However, this can be a stressful time for a dog that is not used to being groomed by strangers. In order to prevent your dog from experiencing a lot of stress or injuring itself or someone else, you will want make use of the following tips.

Wear Your Dog Out Before Going

You want your dog to be a little on the tired side, but not so tired that it is going to fall asleep on the grooming table. After all, your pet groomer is going to need to be able to get your dog to stand and turn in different directions in order to reach the stomach and all around the legs. By wearing your dog out by taking it for a long walk or a run around the yard, it will be less likely to have the energy needed to give the groomer a lot of trouble.

Make Sure Your Dog Is Hungry

You do not want to stare your dog, but you do not want it to have a full stomach for the grooming appointment. The reason for this is that treats can be given to your dog during the grooming process, so you want to make sure that your dog will have an interest in the treats. This allows the groomer to get your dog's attention or helps it associate the grooming process with tasty treats.

Allow Your Dog to Get Used to Some Grooming Tools

Take a few minutes of your time everyday for a week or so before the grooming appointment in order to help your dog become familiar with some grooming supplies that will be used at the dog grooming shop. This way, your pet will not be scared of a brush touching its fur and skin or fearful of the sound of clippers. Spend a little time with your clippers turned on, but with a cover over the end so that you do not accidentally cut your dogs fur. Allow your dog to first sniff the clippers while they are turned on. After it gets used to that, run the covered clippers over the back of your dog and down the side of its legs. You will also want to run the brush through its fur everyday.

With those few tips in mind, you should have no trouble making sure that you are helping your dog become as prepared as possible for a trip to the groomers. Talk to groomers like Abraxas Pet Resort for more tips or assistance.
