Taking Care Of My Pet

About Me

Taking Care Of My Pet

After I found out that I would be traveling a lot for my new job, I knew that I was going to have to make arrangements to care for my dog. I was nervous about leaving him behind, but I knew that the road would be far less comfortable than a cozy boarding facility. To find a great location, I talked with some of my pet owner friends and visited each location in person. I was able to find a facility that put pet care above all else, and I felt comfortable leaving my dog. This blog is dedicated to helping pet owners take care of their pets--even if they happen to travel for work.

3 Critical Things To Look For When Searching For A Pet Boarding Facility

If you own a dog, there may be a time when you need to have them boarded while you're traveling out of town. Although you may be a little apprehensive at first, you can rest assured your dog will be in good hands if you look for these things in a pet boarding facility.

Up-To-Date Vaccinations

A lot of people worry about their dogs catching some sort of sickness when at a pet boarding facility. This has happened to some dog owners, but you can prevent it from happening to you by looking for pet boarding facilities that take a strict stance on vaccinations.

Every dog that stays at the facility should be all caught up on their vaccinations. These should include bordetella, parvo, and influenza. Each pet owner should also be able to provide documentation of these up-to-date vaccinations. This way, you can rest assured your dog won't catch a sickness from another dog at the facility.

Caring Staff

Since you won't be there to give your dog love and attention at the pet boarding facility, you need to make absolutely sure the staff takes a caring approach to their job. You want them to be passionate about taking care of dogs, as it will inspire confidence when leaving your dog with strangers you've never met before.

The best way to assess the overall care and competency of pet boarding staff is to talk to them in person. Ask them questions that give them the chance to show their sympathy for your situation and see how they interact with other dogs at the facility.

Room For Exercise

The last thing you want happening with your dog when at a pet boarding facility is for them to be stuck in a kennel all day long. They need regular exercise to stay happy and healthy, making it necessary to look for pet boarding facilities that provide this space.

Ideally, you should look for facilities that have outdoor areas for dogs to run and play with other dogs. This outdoor area should be enriched as well, with small obstacles and structures for your dog to maneuver around. Even just walking around these outdoor areas is instrumental in the overall satisfaction of your dog while you're away.

If you've never had your dog boarded before, you may be a little hesitant about dropping your dog off at a pet boarding facility. You don't have to worry, though. Just make sure the facility you choose has the right credentials, equipment, and staff.
